Spoken Word Poetry
Derek Berry is a poet & novelist, author of the forthcoming poetry collection “Good Ghost: Alive & Intact” (2018), as well as “Skinny Dipping with Strangers” (2013), and the novel “Heathens and Liars of Lickskillet County” (2016).

He has performed in venues across the southeast including the Gaillard Performing Arts Center, The Music Hall, Charleston City Gallery, the Deckle Edge Literary Festival, the Decatur Book Festival, the Free Verse Festival, Arts in the Heart of Augusta, Berry Fleming Book Festival, Augusta Writer’s Weekend, the Cre8 Conference, & TEDxAugusta 2018.

He performs electric, relevant poetry & publishes challenging, innovative work on the page. His work ranges from ruminations on southern culture to expressions of persona-driven pop culture (in the voice of Bowser, Ke$ha, and more); his work explores also social justice issues as well as grief, self-care, & community.

He is the founder & President of literary non-profit The Unspoken Word, which provides an independent space for creative arts in Charleston, SC through readings, open mics, workshops, & more.

He has been featured in The Post and Courier, The Aiken Standard, Verge, The Charleston City Paper, Charleston Grit, Charleston Currents, The Echo Chamber, Indie Scoop, and other news venues. His creative work can be found in The Water This Time: Anthology on Sea Level Rise in Charleston, Lemonstar Magazine, Rabid Oak, The Comet Poems Series, The Southern Tablet, Cattywampus, Charleston Currents, Illuminations, RiverSedge, Miscellany, and other journals.
