Free Verse Poetry is a collaborative poetic experience blending lyrical exploration, live music re-mixing, and storytelling. It is an immersive experience performed by poets Marcus Amaker & Derek Berry.
Amaker and Berry have performed together at the Gaillard Center for Performing Arts, Charleston Music Hall, REDUX Contemporary Art Gallery, The Charleston History Museum, and elsewhere.
Marcus Amaker is a karaoke singer, a Kate Bush fan and a donut eater. He was named Charleston’s first poet laureate in 2016, and has published 7 books of poetry. After becoming poet laureate, he created the Free Verse Poetry Festival, a city-wide event that puts poetry in public places and schools. In 2019, he was named the Gaillard Center’s artist-in-residence and a SC Humanties Fresh Voice. He is also an award-winning graphic designer for a national music magazine (No Depression), and works with nonprofits to create websites, posters and videos. In 2010, he founded a weekly arts publication, Charleston Scene, for the Post and Courier daily newspaper. As a musician, he’s released 28 electronic albums & two records with Grammy-nominated producer Quentin Baxter.
Derek Berry is an award-winning writer, literary organizer, & omelette enthusiast. They are the author of the novel “Heathens and Liars of Lickskillet County” & poetry chapbook “Skinny Dipping with Strangers.” Their work has appeared in over forty publications, as well as incorporated in multi-media arts installations. They are the founder of the literary non-profit The Unspoken Word and serve on the board of Free Verse Poetry Festival.
