We’re excited to officially introduce the Emerging Local Artists Alley (ELAA) at the Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival!

After a successful trial run at last year’s festival in the Boll Weevil Parking Lot, we’re excited to bring the ELAA back and give it an even bigger spotlight as a dedicated space for Augusta’s emerging creatives with the help of our partners at 4P Studios.

So, what exactly is the Emerging Local Artists Alley?

The ELAA is an area of the festival created specifically for local, emerging artists who are members of the Greater Augusta Arts Council. Managed by our partners at 4P Studios, the ELAA is designed to give artists an opportunity that can be difficult to find: real-world experience selling their work in a professional arts market.

Because making the art is only part of the job.

Selling at an arts festival, especially a multi-day festival, is an experience all its own. Artists have to think about inventory, pricing, displays, packaging, sales, customer interactions, booth setup, managing their time, and having enough work to keep their space looking great throughout the weekend.

There is no better way to learn those skills than by doing them.

Learning From Artists Who Know the Market

One of the most valuable parts of the ELAA is the mentorship provided by 4P Studios.

The artists at 4P Studios are skilled artisans with years of experience participating in craft markets and selling their work directly to the public. They understand the realities of being a working artist, from preparing inventory and creating an effective booth display to interacting with customers and navigating the unexpected challenges that come with a busy festival.

Throughout the festival, the 4P Studios team will help ELAA artists navigate the market process, answer questions, share their experience, and serve as mentors as these emerging creatives take their first steps into the professional marketplace.

It’s an opportunity to learn not just from a handbook, but from artists who have been there and done it themselves.

About 4P Studios

The ELAA is managed in partnership with 4P Studios, a local creative arts organization dedicated to helping artists create, learn, connect, and grow. Located in Martinez, 4P Studios is home to a gallery featuring locally made 2-D and 3-D artwork, as well as studios and educational opportunities in painting, photography, pottery, printmaking, and more.

Beyond providing space for artists to create and share their work, 4P Studios is deeply connected to the working artist community. The artists and artisans involved with 4P Studios have firsthand experience navigating craft markets, selling their work directly to the public, developing displays, connecting with customers, and building sustainable creative practices.

That experience makes 4P Studios an ideal partner for the Emerging Local Artists Alley. Their team will help ELAA artists navigate the realities of participating in a professional market while offering encouragement, advice, and mentorship throughout the festival.

A Place to Learn, Grow & Get Experience

The ELAA is a particularly exciting opportunity for young artists who have aged out of the Young Artist Market (YAM), undergraduate students, and emerging creatives who are ready to begin taking their art career to the next level.

An emerging artist is someone who is in the early stages of building a professional career in the arts. They are developing their artistic voice, building a body of work, and beginning to establish themselves within the professional arts community.

And being an emerging artist isn’t necessarily about age. It’s about where you are in your professional journey.

For many artists, the ELAA may be their first experience selling at a major arts festival. It gives them a chance to test out their work, meet customers, learn what sells, build confidence, and discover what it takes to participate in a professional market—all in a supportive environment alongside other emerging artists.

A Stepping Stone to the Fine Arts & Crafts Market

The ELAA isn’t intended to be a permanent destination. It’s a stepping stone.

Artists may participate in the Emerging Local Artists Alley for up to two years. During that time, we hope they will gain the skills, experience, and confidence needed to eventually take the next step and apply to the Arts in the Heart Fine Arts & Crafts Market.

Think of it as a little bit of “learn by doing” and a whole lot of “let’s see what you’re capable of!”

Local artists featured in 4P Studio’s Tent include Regina Brejda, Ariana Williams, Jenna Niemeier, Harrison Hickman, Stacey Smith, Daniel Pettit, Ilona Metcalf and Sydney Ewerth

These artists represent a diverse range of creative voices and artistic practices, and we can’t wait for festivalgoers to discover their work!
